In an upcoming installment of “Our Water Our Future”, this illustration will include additional interactive
features allowing you to explore more in-depth information about our community’s water supply.
Issues brief
Past generations of leaders made very thoughtful, difficult, and expensive decisions about
where to store and treat drinking water in this community. Now our current generation of
leaders is being asked to make tough choices about the best way to prepare for future
droughts, expected population growth, and to address an aging community infrastructure.
The next five issues of “Our Water Our Future” will:
- Evaluate how the plan prepares for both future droughts and population growth
- Review the 50-year water supply plan which was adopted in 2006 (planning for 2055)
- Assess the plan to build a new dam at Ragged Mountain Reservoir
- Review the impacts of sedimentation on the South Fork Rivanna Reservoir and
the merits of dredging for restored water supply
- Evaluate the costs of the water supply plan and potential alternatives, and
- Detail the next steps for any water supply plan in 2009-2010.
