The gardens of Musée Batha had daily afternoon concerts. Top left, Najwa Gibran dances with the Yuval Ron Ensemble – a mix of Arab and Christian
performers – while Shantala Shivalingappa came from Andhra Pradesh, India (above, right).
The uniqueness of this festival is its inclusiveness. At 6 pm each evening one can sit in a café by the Bab Boujloud and watch the traffic jam of people –
ordinary inhabitants of Fes, women and men, old and young – hurrying to the free concerts held in the huge square beneath the ancient walls. In
size and stature these are no less prestigious than those in the Bab El Makina and for the atmosphere it was my favourite venue. Here
the Moroccon hip-hop band H-Kayan have the massive audience, me included, dancing and jubilant, singing to generic sound-
ing words, Abdelfettah Bennis (above left) performed with his Arab-Andalusian ensemble and Lemchaheb (bottom)
played to the city in colourful robes as the sun set. A truly wonderful festival in a very special place.
Thanks to the Fes Festival of World
Sacred Music and Suman Buchar.
