“Greater Reverence for Ourselves”

Dear Sisters and Brothers in Christ,

Our 36th annual diocesan convention focused on the theme of evangelism under the banner of “More Ready than you Realize,” coined from Brian McLaren’s book by the same title. In his keynote address and workshop, Brian coaxed us to create a safe place for conversations about Jesus by being a gracious presence for those who have not experienced the church as a place of hope and love.

more worthy than others to inhabit heaven after we die. We live in an age when the pace and practices of society tell us to do more, faster; the dominant measure seems ever more to be having and consuming.

Too often we seem so preoccupied with ourselves and the maintenance of our institutions that we forget our calling to be a mission shaped church. Too often we preach at others rather than share in their struggles. As I listened to Brian, I wondered what might happen if we really lived our communal lives as those who serve in Jesus’ name because we feel nothing but joy when we do so. And we know that is our principle reason for being.

Brian called us to remember in all we do that the gospel is for the transformation of the world, not for proving today that we are a clan

There may be no better and more urgent time to pick up the church’s mantel of prophetic leadership and carry on the work of transforming the world according to God’s dream. We pray this dream daily in the Lord’s Prayer when we say, “thy kingdom come, on earth as it is in heaven.”

This prophetic leadership will include a greater reverence for ourselves, our souls and bodies as we work at becoming physically and spiritually more healthy. We do this in our congregations by encouraging and empowering greater health through a rule of life that gives form to less conspicuous consumption, regular prayer, and community action that focuses on helping the least of God’s children. And we do this when we act as a church to repair the harm we have inflicted on God’s creation.

Queridos hermanos y hermanas en Cristo:

Nuestra 36 convención diocesana anual se enfocó en el tema de evangelismo bajo el estandarte de “Mas listo de lo que te imaginas,” extraido del libro de Brian McLaren con el mismo titulo. En su discurso, asi como el taller, Brian nos persuadió a crear lugares seguros de conversación sobre Jesús siendo una presencia grata para aquellos quienes no han experimentado la iglesia como un lugar de amor y esperanza.

A menudo parecemos preocupados con nosotros mismos y con el mantenimiento de nuestras instituciones y solemos olvidar el llamado a la misión de la iglesia. También a veces predicamos a otros en lugar de compartir sus luchas. Mientras escuchaba a Brian, me pregunto que pasaría si realmente viviéramos nuestras vidas comunes como aquellos que sirven en el nombre de Jesús, porque sentimos nada más que jubilo cuando lo hacemos. Y sabemos que es la razónn principal de nuestro ser.

Whether it is how you live your lives, who you work with in your churches on behalf of others or making the 40th celebration of Earth Day a clarion call to behave differently towards this “fragile earth our island home,” you are a part of healing and health.

The apostle Paul suggested that the best way to understand the Church was to think of it as a body. Let us work together to be a healthy body, caring for ourselves and each other. And so oriented, let us be a healing balm upon those who do not yet know the body and upon the earth, God’s good creation.

Brian nos recordó que en todo lo que hacemos, el evangelio es para la transformación del mundo, mas no para proveer que somos una secta mas digna que otras, para habitar el paraíso después de que moramos. Vivimos en un tiempo en que el ritmo y prácticas de la sociedad nos exigen hacer más, y más rápido; las medidas dominantes parecer ser las de siempre, tener más y consumir.

No hay mejor tiempo y urgencia para levantar el manto profético de liderazgo en la iglesia y conducir el trabajo de transformación en el mundo de acuerdo al sueño de Dios. Rezamos este sueño al diario cuando rezamos El Padre Nuestro, “venganos tu reino, en la tierra

como en el cielo.”

El liderazgo profético incluirá una gran reverencia para nosotros, nuestras almas y nuestros cuerpos, mientras trabajamos para llegar a ser física y espiritualmente mas sanos. Ya sea por medio de sus vidas, trabajando con sus iglesias, a nombre de otros o celebrando el 40 aniversario de la celebración de el “Día de la Tierra” el llamado del clarín a comportarnos de manera diferente hacia “la tierra frágil, nuestra isla habitación” ustedes son parte del saneamiento y salud.

El apóstol San Pablo sugería que la mejor manera de entender la iglesia, era pensarla como un cuerpo. Trabajemos juntos para ser un cuerpo saludable, ya sea cuidándonos a nosotros mismos, así como a las diferentes partes del cuerpo. Y orientados a ofrecer remedio balsámico sobre aquellos que no conoce el cuerpo y sobre la tierra, la creación de Dios.
