Further and faster
Unite welcomes the steps in the right direction the Government has taken so far on the
question of housing. In the 2009 Budget £100million was allocated to the social housing
sector to insulate homes and a further £100million allocated for councils to build energy
efficient homes. The Budget also announced £400 million to kickstart house building that
had already been planned but had stalled due to the ‘credit crunch’. However, while
welcome, these actions simply do not go far enough or fast enough in addressing the
scale of housing need.
The focus must now be on the delivery of rapid and substantial action. There is a need to
move further and faster.
Unite wants to support the Government in urgently formulating and implementing a series
of actions, such as those outlined in this document, which have more ambitious targets as
part of an overall economic recovery strategy.
