NEO 2: a portable writing
device with style
The NEO 2 by Alphasmart is a portable writing device. At first I was
sceptical about this looky-likey laptop, but I quickly came to like
the NEO 2. It was surprisingly easy to set up and use. It is a styl-
ish, matt-black standard computer keyboard with a long, narrow
screen built in. The screen measures 14.5
 
cm by 4
 
cm and holds
four lines of text in a clearly legible and bold font. There is no
mouse, but I found that moving the cursor around with the
arrow keys was straightforward.
One of my concerns was excessive battery usage. The NEO 2
comes with batteries included and the manufacturers state that
the three AA alkaline batteries will give 700 hours of use. There
is also a rechargeable battery pack available separately, giving
200 hours of service between charges. There is also a power-saving fea-
ture, which switches off the NEO 2 if it is not used for a few minutes.
Transferring text from the NEO 2 to a desktop computer can be done
wirelessly or along two metres of USB cable. Children will see their text
appearing magically on the desktop and think it is quite cool – I did!
The NEO 2 has a range of uses. It is easily carried around and can be
used for writing while on school trips. There are options available to
create quizzes and also to use the NEO 2 as a voting tool.
It is a nifty little device and retails at £149 + VAT.
