Green giant
Work is well under way on Ropemaker,
British Land's new 586,000 sq ft office
development in EC2. Designed by Arup
Associates, the 20 storey building has
impressive sustainability credentials
including rainwater harvesting and a
double-glazed tilted façade to reduce
heat gain, as well as green roof terraces
with stunning City views. Work is
progressing on site; the steel frame
has reached the top level and practical
completion is scheduled for summer.
Solar HarneSSing
There will be both solar and photovoltaic
panels to convert sunlight directly into
electricity. Heat generated by IT equipment
will be also be recovered and reused.
green roofS
50% of the building's roof space is designated
green and will be partially covered with plants
and soil to enhance biodiversity.
doUBle glazed TilTed facade
Each window folds to turn away from the
sun – some are shaded by external horizontal
blades while others tilt downwards. This will
reduce the energy required for cooling by up
to 27%.
rainwaTer HarveSTing
Rainwater is collected via the facade and roof
terraces to flush WCs, reduce mains usage and
minimise impact on local drainage. The system
will save enough water each year to fill 10,000
bath tubs.
