Encouraging STEM careers
Former teacher,
Tomorrow’s
World presenter,
and qualified
engineer Kate Bellingham
has been appointed the
government national STEM
careers co-ordinator. She
writes for SecEd, explaining
why she is asking teachers
to encourage their students
to consider STEM careers
f you are reading this in the staffroom,
I
clutching a well deserved cup of coffee and
grabbing a few spare minutes to relax, I quite
understand that your immediate thoughts
may not be “how can I integrate careers
into my lessons”. unless you are a careers
teacher, your reaction may well be “not my
department”.
But before you finish your coffee and return to
class, spare me a couple of moments to explore the
opportunities of using a “work context” in lessons,
particularly when teaching STEM (science, technology,

School business
management programmes
The role of the school business manager is now widely recognised as being
an integral part of helping schools make better use of their resources and
facilities, enabling headteachers to focus on leading teaching and learning.
NCSL currently offers two programmes that are accredited by the Institute
of Administrative Management, and recognised as an industry standard by
employers across England: Certificate of School Business Management (CSBM)
and Diploma of School Business Management (DSBM), both designed for
completion within a 12-month period.
“The DSBM programme really helped me focus on whole school development
and strategic leadership. It's a must for any school business manager's continuing
professional development.” Gordon Bell, DSBM Graduate, Houghton Kepier
Sports College, Tyne and Wear.
The application round for the DSBM is open until 15 April 2009. To find out
more information and apply online, please visit
