Editor’s Note
I hope you had an enjoyable festive season and a
peaceful and healthy start to 2009. Spoon enters its
second year of 25th Anniversary celebrations this
year and what a way to start the next phase of
Spoon’s life. Although 2008 was another great year
for Spoon distributing our £15 millionth pound, the
reality is that it isn’t easy for anyone at present. But
Spoon is determined that those who most need our
help shouldn’t be the ones that suffer because of the
financial constraints being applied to our every day
lives. Regardless of how much tightening of our belts
we may have to do the discomfort is unlikely to meet
that experienced by many children suffering from
mental, physical and social disadvantages on a
constant basis through the UK and Ireland.
2009 will bring us all many new challenges, as the
economy falters and our comforts are tested. Rugby,
like Wooden Spoon, has a positive role to play in this
climate - bringing together people from different
environments, offering an antidote to every day
problems and putting smiles on faces of all those
who love this sport.
Rugby is more than just a game and a weekend
recreation; it is membership of a family whose
friendship, camaraderie and support are life long
companions. It can be the catalyst to a new life,
creating winners both on and off the pitch. The
essence of all that is good in rugby remains at the
heart of Spoon’s foundations and principles. We
harness the spirit and values of the sport and deliver
the benefits derived from the generosity of the rugby
family to help disadvantage children and young
people reach their full potential in life. Contents
Spoon looks forward to the next 25 years with
enthusiasm and passion to raise more funds and help
create more winners in life.
