Mastercam MT also offers pinch turn and pinch mill capability.

We’d have two, three, or even fi ve programs in the back- ground and be working on just one. Now we jump from one to the other and we stay ahead of the game. With Master- cam’s simulation, we spend a lot less time tying up the ma- chines. It allows us to verify operations, stock material, and syncing. It has provided us with the confi dence to know that once at the machine, we won’t have any issues.” On top of faster programming, Wiseco is saving time by

reducing machine cycles using the program’s Dynamic Mo- tion that automatically adjusts tool motions to optimize mate- rial removal while reducing wear on the tool. “We use the full fl ute length of the tool on the cut. This spreads out wear on the tool,” Knodel said.

“In the past, it would have taken several weeks before we could get a set of pistons out. Now it’s 3–5 days.”

“Thanks to this software,’ he added, “we are able to

provide our customers quicker delivery times to ensure they are ready for race day. We can have a good mill-turn program ready for the machine in a matter of hours and do lights-out machining. In the past, it would have taken several weeks before we could get a set of pistons out. Now it’s 3–5 days.” Customers have been impressed with Wisesco’s dramati- cally improved responsiveness and rewarded the company

by bringing it into a number of R&D partnerships. For example, the company is producing some advanced piston and crank designs intended to help teams improve horse- power. To encourage these types of partnerships, Wiseco has installed its own dynamometer to expedite these research products with NASCAR engine testing at their own plant.

Taking It Into Production With mill-turning proven for fast-turn manufacturing for race teams, Wiseco turned to improving mill-turn program- ming and production effi ciency for its off-the-shelf perfor- mance products. In the past, Wiseco wasn’t willing to consid- er this. Because of the initial experience with labor-intensive programming and long cycle times, mill-turning did not seem a good fi t for the Wiseco’s production manufacturing. Knodel said, “Now that we have been able to see the added benefi t of the mill-turn’s productivity with Mastercam MT, we purchased two additional mill-turn centers and that transition has been fl awless.”

Although the equipment was completely different, Master-

cam’s Mill-Turn programming environment was totally familiar to the programmers. As soon as the equipment was delivered and powered up, a Mastercam Mill-Turn program was already waiting. These machines have been in full-production 24/7 since late 2014.
