In Dons Barn brick walls give a lot of character and warmth to a house and Mark says he left many of them exposed. “But where we plastered walls, we did so by hand, so they look more natural and in keeping with the age of the cottages. Everything we do is sympathetic to the original building. You won't find any laminate flooring here!”

Mark says he really enjoys furnishing the cottages as this example (left) of The Bakery, Grove Farm shows. “I always look for furniture that is above all comfortable and good quality. I went to lots of auctions and antiques fairs, to find some of the quirkier items and found some great Lloyd Loom chairs, rustic dressers, comfy arm chairs and other more unusual pieces

Guests staying at the cottages at Grove Farm have use of the ample garden with plenty of trees to picnic under and there is also a fruit tree orchard with pears and apples. Dogs are welcome and bikes and BBQs are available for guests to use

We like to use warm colours for the furnishings, such as these red lampshades in The Bakery (above), which makes the cottage feel really welcoming when people walk through the door for the first time. Personal touches are important; there will always be a breakfast basket and fresh flowers on the table
