Copenhagen-based designer Johan Joensen is working with master-boatbuilder Jørgen Jensen to create a brand new 5.5 Metre for two-time Olympic gold medallist Jesper Bank to race at the 5.5m world championships at the end of August

The DNA of our new Nordic 5.5 is based on a lifetime of experience sailing on the waters outside Copenhagen where this year’s 5.5m worlds will be raced.

The new design by Johan Joensen is both a modern and a classical approach to the 5.5 Metre rule – which was written back in 1949. The goal has of course been to make a fast 5.5, but also something beautiful that will give its owner many years of pleasure. The design started with the maximum sail area allowed within the rule, combined with a minimum wetted surface hull shape but with the sailing waterline still stretched as long as is feasible. The keel fin is sited as far aft as possible to allow the rig also to be placed well back. Relatively fine bow sections will make the boat easier to keep in the groove upwind – the waters in Copenhagen tend to be choppy and there is often a lot of current to distract you. Build is in epoxy/foam sandwich.

The task of designing a 5.5 is particularly interesting because of the complexity of a now nearly 70-year-old measurement rule, which is strict in some respects but wide open to interpretation in others. In 2016 it is exactly 50 years since Paul Elvstrøm sailed and won the 5.5m World Cup in Copenhagen. That gave us the idea that it would be fantastic to get a new Danish designed and built 5.5 on the water for this year’s event.

This design gives us all the opportunity to demonstrate that we are capable of both designing and building a boat that can be fully competitive in a world-class fleet.
