TRAVE L J ERS E Y

If a dip in the sea or lying on the beach is not for you there are no shortage of attractions to fill your days.

A trip to Jersey is not complete without a visit to the town centre of St. Helier, the largest of the island’s 12 parishes. Wander around the 200-year-old central markets which are bursting with colour, characters and local produce. The island currency is Sterling, but also has its own money, the Jersey pound - one of the last few places you’ll see a pound note.

If it’s culture and heritage you are looking for, Jersey is brimming with it. Delve into the island’s past at one of the ten oldest buildings in the world. La Hougue Bie was built before the pyramids and will transport you to Neolithic Jersey. You’ll also discover ancient treasures including a magnificent Celtic coin hoard. Or why not climb to the highest heights at Mont Orgueil Castle, a magnificent castle which has sat above the fishing port of Gorey for more than 800 years and offers lots of opportunities to up your step count! It also affords stunning views of the French coast just 14 miles away from the highest battlements so don’t forget your cameras.

For history lovers there is also the Elizabeth castle, reached by ferry or a walk at low tide, World War II bunkers, ancient burial grounds, caves and museums telling the story of the island’s wartime involvement.

No visit to Jersey would be complete with a visit to the world-renowned Jersey Zoo, made famous again in recent years by the TV show The Durrells. Established in 1959 by naturalist and writer Gerald Durrell, it is now operated by the Durrell Wildlife Conservation Trust and is home to many threatened species and is highly regarded for its vital conservation work. As well as day visits to the zoo, there are packages available to allow you to become ‘a keeper for the day’ giving a fascinating insight into the amazing work that goes on behind the scenes and there are also options to stay at the zoo in either their hostel or 5* glamping.

Outside of the zoo wildlife abounds too. A boat trip with Seafaris to Les Ecréhous, an archipelago just six miles from the coast of Jersey, might give you a glimpse of dolphins out to play whilst those enjoying coastal walks will be sure to spot puffins and kestrels. One of the island’s best kept secrets and more unusual trips is a bioluminescence walk. Like a firework display at your feet, meet your guide at La Rocque Harbour for a private walk - as the tide goes out, tiny creatures light up the sand.

For those looking to indulge their appetite for gourmet delights, they will not be disappointed as Jersey has become something of a gastronomic hotspot. Foodies can feed their soul with continental flavours from Jersey’s ‘Big Four’ - lobsters, oysters, Jersey Royals and Jersey dairy – with the combined Anglo French influences creating a culinary fusion not to be missed. There are also wine and cider makers, seafood restaurants, farm shops and village delis all serving up an authentic taste of island life.
