The Fast Timer can also be used with a single light gate controlling start/stop or by two separate light gates. A change of level of 50mV is required to start/stop timing.
A. Speed of Sound Kit
This kit includes everything you need to measure the speed of sound in the classroom.
• Direct method for measuring time taken for sound to travel a known distance
• The Fast Timer can be used in many other experiments
This kit provides a direct method to measure the speed of sound. Timing to microsecond accuracy is started and stopped as sound passes the microphones - see the experimental diagram. A small hammer and metal plate is included in the kit to make the necessary sharp sound. The Fast Timer, when used with mechanical start/stop gates, has many other applications e.g. in the measurement of g by free-fall.
The kit consists of: • Fast timer • 2 x Ceramic microphones • Mini claw hammer • Metal Plate E8R02657
For a single light gate a positive bias can be selected so the gate can be used whether obstructed or unobstructed.
Timing ranges are 1 to 999.9ms and 1 to 9999 sµ B. Ceramic Microphone
This high impedance, high sensitivity unit may be used with a power amplifier for public address or connected directly to an oscilloscope (page 77) to show audio waveforms. Fitted with 90cm screened flex and two 4mm plugs.
