A. Smart Putty


Smart Putty is soft, stretchy and bendy when moved slowly; solid when trying to move quickly or impacted.


It has the remarkable property that it usually behaves as a soft mouldable plastic (like chewing gum), but instantly becomes a rubber if impacted: i.e., it bounces like a ball. One of its uses in engineering is to assist in the machining of turbine blades! It is loaded with grit and injected under high pressure into the small bore cooling channels that are cast into the turbine blades for cooling. The unique rheological properties of the putty are ideally suited for the purpose of polishing the channel walls. Proposed uses in design and technology include: demonstration of an unusual polymer; product sample for toy design and packing projects; unusual products that utilise the inherent properties such as very slow flow or ‘creep’. This completely non-toxic powder absorbs up to 500 times its own weight in water and is the ‘secret’ ingredient used in applications ranging from babies nappies to perpetual growing plants. Pearl Swirl™ Fluid is the secret ingredient that gives some shampoos that pearly-white look or creates wave currents in some shake-up water toys. In scientific terms, Pearl Swirl is a rheoscopic fluid, but it’s a concentrate that makes 2 gallons! When added to water (or other liquids), it allows you to see the movement or currents in the liquid. This pearly-white, water-based suspension is safe and non-toxic and excellent for teaching units on ocean currents, aerodynamics, turbulence, convection, and many other motion effects that are often difficult for students to visualise.

This material consists of nano-size silicon flakes each covered with a titanium compound. The flakes possess amazing light scattering properties if mixed with clear varnishes or polymers. An object thus coated will change colour completely according to the viewing angle. The material can be mixed into practically any clear medium to produce optical ‘fireworks’ and colourchanging characteristics.

These pigments normally have a pale, off-white appearance but in sunlight or UV light they change to a bright, vivid colour. The pigments revert to their pale colour when away from sunlight or UV light.


The active photochromic dye is contained in micron-size microcapsules dispersed in water to make up the pigment, which has the consistency of thick cream. If the pigment is mixed with a binder, such as an acrylic base, it can be permanently applied to almost any surface. The practical applications of the pigments are almost limitless. Uses range from UV warning systems to ‘smart graphics’ in publications and packaging and garment design. Methods of application include brush painting, block printing, stencilling, screen printing etc. 3g supplied in a plastic syringe.

G. Thermochromic Pigments


These thermochromic pigments are made up as a liquid paste compatible with any acrylic media. At normal room temperature the pigment appears coloured, but at 27°C the colour disappears. When the temperature falls, the pigment colouring re-appears. 5ml supplied in a plastic syringe.


• The ratio of acrylic base to colouring pigment depends entirely on the application and density of colour required
