The power of connection
Your support helps provide a lifeline to people affected by MND. Every year, the MND Connect helpline phones ring thousands of times.
On the other end of the line, it could be someone who’s coming to terms with their diagnosis, or it could be worried friends, family or colleagues.
The team don’t just offer emotional support and a listening ear: for anyone looking for advice and information,
“This most amazing organisation lifted us from the pit of despair after the diagnosis. We were feeling frightened and alone, but the call saved our sanity. Thank you!” MND Connect caller
MND Connect is the first port of call. It might be updates on the latest research, advice on housing adaptations, or information for health professionals on how to help someone with MND manage their symptoms.
It’s thanks to the generosity of people like you that our six-strong team of advisors can be there, ready to support anyone who gets in touch. The team has a range of backgrounds in health and social care, from occupational therapists to nurses, and teachers to carers. Together they offer over 70 years’ experience of providing support to people with MND.
Ruth Paintin is a Senior Advisor at MND Connect and has been part of the team for 12 years. She’s absolutely passionate about her work: “Nothing is too much trouble,” she says. “You’re there for people in their darkest hour – and that shapes you as a person.”
Often the conversation doesn’t end when the phone is put down. “We do call-backs to individuals who might

not have a network of people around them,” Ruth reveals, “We’ll also follow up with GPs and local authorities as well. Sometimes a little nudge in the right direction is all that’s needed to ensure an individual gets the right support.”
