Since 2006, non-profit Hidden Treasures of Hope has provided low-income residents with free groceries and clothing.

In 2015, the organization moved to Whittier, and once they heard about the Parks After Dark (PAD) Program at Amelia Mayberry Park, they knew they had to get involved to better serve their new community. In addition to distributing basic need items, the group views building the confidence and self-esteem of children and adults as an important task.

Each year during the summer PAD program, the organization’s volunteers set up what has become Amelia Mayberry Park’s most popular booth. Their message is simple: “Spin the Wheel!” Participants may or may not win a prize, but what everyone who visits their booth walks away with is knowing that someone cares!

“For us, it’s not about winning. It’s about people knowing that you won’t always win in life,” said group founder and volunteer Cynthia Morales. “During the short time we have with the children and their parents, we do our best to build their self-esteem, and encourage them to be the best they can be.”

During the PAD program, Hidden Treasures of Hope invites participants to take part in their free services that are offered year-round for Whittier area residents. The group provides information on their mobile food truck, assistance

to grandparents who are raising their grandchildren, provide free clothing, and distribute healthy fruits and vegetables to seniors.

During their first year of participating in PAD, Cynthia realized there were a lot of Spanish- speaking residents visiting their booth, and that was challenging from the standpoint of being able to communicate in English. But, that challenge didn’t last long. Because of PAD, the following year, Cynthia was inspired to learn to speak Spanish so that she could provide the same encouragement to everyone regardless of the language they spoke.

Cynthia was moved to tears as she described a young boy who walked around the park during the PAD Program last year with a pet bird on his shoulder that his father trained. The boy seemed down and didn’t socialize much with the other kids. However, when he came to visit the Hidden Treasures of Hope booth, and Cynthia asked him what he wanted to be when he grows up, the boy didn’t know; but, he knew he loved his bird.

The encouragement from Cynthia as she explained he could one day become an animal doctor and work with birds lit up his face with excitement and hope! These are the moments during PAD that leave a long-lasting impression on the community.
