undeniably, more cost conscious than they once were and they continue to shift risk down the supply chain. Technology must become the most important weapon at the disposal of those handling heavy and oversize cargoes in the years to come, in order to respond accordingly. Logistics providers that serve EPCs and


OEMs will need to adopt a significant level of automation and there has been a steady realisation that innovation is required – and progress is being made.


A year in review 2019 proved to be a demanding year for the multipurpose shipping sector. The fallout of Hansa Heavy Lift’s insolvency saw DrChristoph Morgen, preliminary insolvency administrator for the company, confirm in February that the shipping line would no longer have a business model at its disposal and would therefore have no business to operate. Ove Meyer, co-founder of Zeaborn, resigned from his role as managing director of Zeamarine in July and, come December, a management reshuffle saw Jan Hendrik Többe, Zeaborn’s other co-founder, depart the company along with chief commercial officer, Dominik Stehle. Heavy Lift (UHL) also significantly expanded its fleet with the addition of 12 ships. The agreement quadruples the carrier’s multipurpose capacity and complements its fleet of seven specialised module carriers. Included in the deal are the nine 2018/9-built Eco Lifter ships. At the time of writing, reports suggested


that Zeamarine has approached competitors regarding other parts of its fleet, including its four ZEA 9k-500-type vessels.

In June, Chinese-Polish carrier Chipolbrok announced that it was observing market developments closely as it discussed the addition of four vessels to its fleet. Although rates, on average, have crept


upwards during the past 12 months, the sector remains crippled with overcapacity, which is worsened by a slump in availability of cargoes. Chipolbrok said that its liner service had been impacted by political developments that had produced negative investment sentiment, particularly within the oil and gas industry.
