GS1: Opening General Session: On the Edge: The Art of High-Impact Leadership

8–10 a.m. Program Track: Practice Development and Management Moderator: Barry D. Wagenberg Keynote Speaker: Alison Levine

Imagine yourself on the highest mountain in the world. You’re at 26,000 feet above sea level—a place known as the death zone; an elevation at which human beings cannot survive for long. For captain of the first American Women’s Everest expedition, Alison Levine, this was no imagination but a real-life situation. Facing the elements, Levine learned the importance of judgment and why straying from the plan is necessary to succeed in certain situations. Levine draws from her experience to demonstrate how being an effective leader and receiving contributions from each team member are necessary to overcome great obstacles. Levine’s anecdotes will leave you with amazing insight and knowledge that will help you take on your toughest obstacles.

Educational Objectives:

• Identify the right questions to ask, how to build the right team, and ways to break down challenges to smaller parts.

• Recognize how to make decisions under pressure to become an effective leader.

• Evaluate why judgment is always crucial to be able to adjust to any situation and deviate from “the plan.”

Thanks to Philips for sponsoring this general session.
