Insight Finnair is to open a new route for the winter 2019/20 season to Sapporo in Japan. The carrier will fly the route from December 15 to March 27 with two weekly frequencies. It will become the first European carrier to serve Hokkaido since KLM ended service in late- January 2002. It will be Finnair’s sixth destination in Japan, in addition to

Tokyo Narita, Osaka, Nagoya and Fukuoka. Finnair has the largest

presence in Japan of all the European carriers and offers 15% of seats from Europe to Japan (Air France is the second largest with 13%). There is no competition for Sapporo, so it will have the market to itself. Across all of the Japanese routes

served by Finnair, the airline only generates 11% of passengers from the local market between Helsinki and Japan, while 76% is from behind Helsinki with the largest source airports including London Heathrow, Barcelona, Stockholm, Paris and Copenhagen. The remaining 13% took onward flights from Sapporo.

Hong Kong

Insight HK Express is resuming service to Thailand capital Bangkok from March 31, 2019, with five weekly flights from Hong Kong to Suvarnabhumi Airport. The service will operate on

Tuesdays, Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays using Airbus A320 equipment. The low-cost carrier previously operated between Hong

Kong and Bangkok Don Mueang from July to October 2015. The planned resumption means HK Express is re-entering an already crowded market, which is currently served by a total of nine carriers.

Eight of them operate between

Hong Kong and Suvarnabhumi, while AirAsia flies to Don Mueang. Cathay Pacific has a dominant position, with a 35.8% capacity share of the market.

Insight British Airways (BA) is to fly from London Heathrow to Islamabad, Pakistan's capital city, from June 2, 2019. The route will launch as a three-per-week service, operated on a three-class Boeing 787 Dreamliner. The carrier has a long history of flying to the city and offered its first scheduled flights between London and Islamabad in 1976. However, it discontinued the route in October 2008. BA will compete with Pakistan International Airlines, which operates the route five times per week using Boeing 777 equipment. The UK-Pakistan market is 1.2 million in size, with 645,000 passengers travelling indirectly. Approximately one-third of those currently fly via Dubai, data from Sabre Market Intelligence shows. Greater London has the largest Pakistani community in the UK so British Airways will be targeting VFR traffic. The route to Islamabad is one
