Routes Asia 2019 was held in Cebu, the Philippines, from March 10-12


Cebu welcomes 1,000-plus delegates at event


A record number of airlines attended Routes Asia 2019 when it was held in March in Cebu, the Philippines. A total of 113 airlines were joined by airport and tourist board representatives at the two-and-a- half day event. Overall it meant a total of more than 1,000 delegates representing 60 countries were at Routes Asia 2019, which saw 830 hours of meetings take place. Business wasn’t the only topic on the agenda. The welcome reception on the fi rst night gave delegates a chance to get to know each other on a more casual basis, while hosts the Philippine Department


of Tourism laid on some spectacular entertainment and a sensational fi reworks display. The conference featured senior


speakers from some of the region’s biggest airlines including Philippine Airlines, Virgin Australia and Jetstar Airways. Mactan-Cebu International Airport chief executive advisor Andrew Acquaah-Harrison and senior members of the Philippine Department of Tourism also addressed the audience. Erwin Balane, head of route development for the Philippine Department of Tourism, said in the run-up to the event: “We will be able to raise our profi le in the Asian


aviation community and demonstrate that the Philippines is a multi- gateway destination, where aviation infrastructures are in place and international airports are compliant with international aviation standards. “By promoting the Philippines


to leading carriers in Asia, we will continue to improve air connectivity from major tourist source markets to the Philippines.” Routes brand director Steven Small added: “In hosting Routes Asia 2019, the City of Cebu is perfectly placed to welcome more air connectivity by showcasing its growing economy and impressive new airport infrastructure to the region’s key decision makers.”
