BARRASS TO ADDRESS ITT ODYSSEY SUPPER

Tom Parry

Former dnata Travel Europe senior vice- president Steve Barrass will address the ITT Odyssey Supper later this month – a speech president Steven Freudmann predicts to be “of much interest”. Barrass became chief executive of

travel and event management company The Appointment Group (TAG) in August 2018 – recruiting industry veterans Ruth Hilton and Terry Williamson in November. Freudmann said he was looking

forward to hearing Barrass speak at The Groucho Club in London on 19 September after a period “keeping his head down” since the appointment. “Steve has been a very loyal member

of ITT for more than 20 years but had never spoken at one of our events,” commented Freudmann. “I know he has been busy working

away in his new role, so I wanted to take the opportunity to invite him to speak. [TAG] is a business not many attendees would know, so I imagine they will be very interested to hear about his new company and role.” The Odyssey Supper is the first of ITT’s

programme of autumn events – with the President’s Dinner following on 31 October.

‘The relationship between teaching and the travel industry is clear’

Peter Robinson, F.Inst.TT, head of the Centre for Tourism and Hospitality Management, Leeds Beckett University and ITT director

I

have been involved with the ITT Education and Training committee since 2011, and when I moved to my role at Leeds Beckett University in 2018 it was great to know the institution was already a Centre of Excellence and had a long-standing relationship with the ITT, with eight of our students winning ITT awards in the past two years. Our core business is our teaching and our research, together with consultancy work. Consultancy clearly has industry relevance, while the relationship between teaching and industry is also clear. Many students go on a sandwich

year with companies, with a good percentage offered jobs as a result.

Universities perhaps need to do more to demonstrate that a tourism graduate will, by their third year, have studied all the business functions for working in any sector. Universities work hard to attain high-impact research, which, sadly, few in industry will read in any detail. Yet this research contains predictions, current opportunities and considered debate to inform our sector. For this reason, we have recently launched a Leeds Beckett University Institute of Travel and Tourism PhD impact bursary to explore the changing nature of consumer behaviour in the travel industry, which will unlock new knowledge with regard to travel decision-making.

During that dinner, at London’s Savoy

Hotel, Freudmann will also reveal the location of the 2020 ITT Conference. This year’s conference was held at the

Le Meridien Lav hotel in the Croatian city of Split in June, with speakers including easyJet boss Johan Lundgren and Lord Andrew Adonis. The next destination, Freudmann

said, “will be short-haul with sunshine and less than four hours away”. The following week, ITT will host its annual ITT Members’ Lounge during November’s WTM London at ExCeL. Freudmann said the space allowed

ITT members to “take a break” from the busy trade show and provided an area for them to hold their own private meetings. Sponsor of the lounge for 2019 is
