Although a liberal air service agreement between Mexico and Canada already exists, the new deal removes some administrational challenges faced by airlines operating between the countries, which will make it easier for airlines to react to market pricing conditions. Although the airline has been operating international services from Cancun since early 2015, these will be Interjet’s first Canadian services from the famous Mexican leisure destination, which will add greater competition to the existing 1.8 million O&D passenger market.

Insight China Airlines previously operated to London Heathrow Airport between March 2010 and March 2012. The route joins its European services to Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Vienna and Rome. The new routes will compete with the existing EVA service that operates via Bangkok and numerous connecting services through the Middle East and Europe as both Emirates and Turkish Airlines have launched Taipei in the past three years. The route will serve the Taiwanese community in the UK and provide connectivity through Taipei to the rest of southeast Asia and Australia. The volumes are large and the premium traffic is developing thanks to Taiwan’s leadership in electronics. It is the world’s largest producer of semi- conductors, with huge conglomerates like the Foxconn Technology Group leading the way. British Airways last served Taipei, via Hong Kong, in March 2002, through subsidiary British Asia Airways.

This is an interesting move by Primera Air, which tends not to take the sole risk on route innovation but instead relies on tour operator support. Primera, part of the Danish Primera Travel Group, has obviously noticed the 2.7 million passenger market between London and New York and realised that with an Airbus A321neo it can serve these thinner markets and offer a lower fare. The prices are leading in at £149 inclusive of taxes. Stansted is an interesting choice. It has a wealthy catchment area and huge life sciences developments in Cambridge, with AstraZenca building its global head office there. Primera is hoping the disposable income and lack of immediate competition will provide a recipe for success. US services have been offered before from Stansted by Max Jet and Continental Airlines, but the market is different now in terms of market size, aircraft technology and the competitive environment. Primera has also announced Boston from London Stansted and Birmingham to New York.
