Routes Europe FUTURE EVENTS

Santiago Cathedral in Bilbao

Bilbao Airport, which handled 4.58 million passengers in 2016, an increase of 7.3% over 2015. Bilbao’s airport is the most

important in northern Spain, boasting 44 European destinations. A flurry of new routes in recent months include Sevilla and Ibiza from Volotea, Edinburgh with easyJet and Norwegian’s Tenerife service. Traffic is also growing at the

region’s smaller airport, Donostia - San Sebastián, and at Vitoria – Gasteiz which deals mainly with cargo. The three airports and the ports of Bilbao and Pasaia (near San Sebastián) form a significant logistics centre that connects the Basque Country to the rest of Europe. Routes Europe 2018 will give the Basque Country the opportunity to show the aviation industry why it is a destination on the rise. Many traditional destinations in

Spain are becoming increasingly expensive as they reach their saturation points, but Bilbao offers a high quality alternative with a unique and undiscovered character. Steven Small, brand director

of Routes, says: “Bilbao and the Basque Country are comparatively new tourist destinations which offer rich cultural experiences. Bilbao has been studied all over the world as destinations attempt to replicate its regeneration programme. “Our delegates will be excited to

explore the aviation opportunities in Bilbao and the wider Basque Country.” Alfredo Retortillo, Basque Country

minister of tourism, trade and consumer affairs, adds: “We are going to offer our genuine hospitality, ancient traditions, modernity reflected in the titanium shields of the Guggenheim Museum and last but not least some of the most Michelin- starred gastronomy in the world.”
