GATEWAY TO AUSTRALIA

Adelaide Airport A

delaide Airport has just come off a very successful 2016 and is excited for the future as it pursues new opportunities in 2017.

The bumper year included welcoming two new international routes: Qatar Airways in May and China Southern Airlines in December. Both routes were significant as Jonathan Cheong, Head of Aviation at Adelaide Airport Limited explains:

“We were delighted to welcome the Qatar Airways service. As a bonus Adelaide was the first airport in Australia to have the new A350 operate. The China Southern Airlines flight was our first direct service from mainland China and opened up significant tourism, education and business links for South Australia”.

South Australia and its capital city of Adelaide made a significant statement when leading travel organisation Lonely Planet trumpeted our success by ranking South Australia in its Top 5

Regions in the World to visit in 2017.

Other notable acknowledgements included Adelaide being named the World’s #1 Rising Star Destination in 2017 by Trip.com and Adelaide Airport ranked as the 9th Best International Airport for 2016 by Travel + Leisure.

There was also an announcement by Fiji Airways which will begin flights between Adelaide and Nadi from June 2017. “This service provides direct access to a popular leisure destination for South Australians and adds another one-stop option to the US West Coast” Mr Cheong said.

“The new connection from mainland USA will help service the growing inbound market to South Australia which saw a huge 39% increase in visitors from North America in the 12 months to September 2016. Overall it was a record breaking year for international visitors to South Australia with an increase of 10% taking international visitor numbers to 430,000.”

To top off the big year, Adelaide was announced as the host for World Routes in 2019, the first to be held in Australasia. Mr Mark Gill, Manager Aviation Development at the South Australian Tourism Commission said “This is a major coup for Adelaide and South Australia. It will deliver a $20m windfall to our visitor economy and showcase our amazing destination to airline route planners from around the world”.
