2 Design Considerations 2.1 Guidance Documents

10 The DAS produced by EAOL in November 2012 has been informed by numerous guidance documents – such as design guidelines by CABE, as well as the EIA – and in particular the landscape and visual impact assessment carried out for the proposed converter station.

11 This document takes into consideration all the various guidance documents noted above.

2.2 Additional Design Considerations

12 This document also takes into consideration and embraces the design principles promulgated by Suffolk County Council and Mid Suffolk District Council developed in June 2013, and updated in July 2013. Meetings were held with the local planning authority (LPA) on design and landscape mitigation, which have also been taken into consideration.

13 In summary, these design principles emphasise the need for converter station design to be sensitive to place and minimise impacts as far as possible. They reference the need to consider appropriate building design and material, to ensure blending with the local environment and minimisation of visual clutter. The principles also reference a desire to have regard to ecological mitigation and enhancement which dovetails with a sustainable drainage strategy. Lastly, the design principles from the Local Authorities highlight the need for full engagement with local communities and for the converter station to be exemplar in terms of design.

14 Owing to its scale and height, the converter station building (s) when built will be visible from various locations in the surrounding area2. A site visit was carried out in June 2013 to study and understand the local vernacular style of architecture, especially for large agricultural buildings and residential barn conversions.
