Introduction

The Outline Bawdsey bed level monitoring and remediation strategy relates to the offshore infrastructure (Work 3B) associated with the East Anglia ONE landfall site.

The delivery of this final strategy will be secured through Condition 9(i) of the Draft Deemed Marine License as follows, the principles outlined in this startergy will be adheared to in finalising the bed level montirng and remediation plan;

9 The licensed activities or any part of those activities shall not commence until the following (as relevant to that part) have been submitted to and approved in writing by the MMO:

(i) A bed level monitoring and remediation plan for that area of Work No. 3B belowMHWS in accordance with the outline Bawdsey bed level monitoring and remediation strategy, to include:

(i) monitoring of bed levels of London clay for the operational lifetime of the authorised scheme; and

(ii) a methodology for any remedial works in that area identified as necessary by such monitoring.

The parameters and actions outlined in this strategy have developed in the context of an Environmental Impact Assesment (EIA) with regard to the proposed development and detailed analysis of the coastal changes in vicinity of the landfall site. This information is presented in Chapter 6, Marine and Coastal Processes, of the Environmental Assessement and Appendix 3A12 of EAOL’s written response to Deadline I, 30th July 2013.

2 4 Background

The short Horizontal Directional Drill (HDD) option for cable installation at the landfall will punch-out within the shallow (<10m LAT) nearshore zone. At the punch- out point, a trench would be excavated into the sub-tidal London Clay platform using a barge mounted excavator or suction dredger. This would take place from the duct end into deeper water and softer sediments, where a plough or jetting tool could be used to install the export cable further offshore. Protection of the cable will be achieved by backfilling the trench with the excavated London Clay material.
