Progression and Support Team-Supporting personal tutors
When to Refer a Student to Progression and Support Team
Personal tutors are of course not expected to be experts, or have extensive experience in providing non-academic support to students.
Where a personal tutor has identified general support needs with their tutee, this When to Refer Guide can assist them in signposting the student directly to the appropriate support service.
On occasion though, a student may present a complex and/or severe concern and will need to access support/guidance from multiple services, possibly concurrently and urgently.
Using a quick and easy referral form, personal tutors can alert the Progression and Support Team(PST) to these complex referrals, enabling them to case manage the student through their difficulties.
Noticing concerns to enable early intervention is key – PST’s aim is to provide students experiencing complex difficulties with the earliest support so they have the best possible opportunity for them to stay on programme, progress and succeed. Throughout this process, personal tutors and programme teams will be kept updated by PST case managers.
In addition to the support PST can provide to personal tutors, they act as a first point of contact for those students experiencing life transitions which result in changes of circumstances.
For example, a student may need to talk to someone about possibly changing from one course to another, taking some time out away from their course or leaving their course early. Personal tutors finding students in such situations should direct a student to complete the online forms available via UniHub. If a student is unable or unwilling to complete the form, personal tutors can simply refer to PST using the referral form.
Changes of circumstances may be requested in the following ways:
— Take time out (interrupt study) – http://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/support/withdrawal
— Change of course (transfer) – http://wgfp-prrw02.mdx.ac.uk:8001/staticforms/RequestToChangeProgramme.aspx
— Change of mode ( full time/part time) –
http://wgfp-prrw02.mdx.ac.uk:8001/staticforms/RequestToChangeProgramme.aspx
— Request to leave the University (withdraw) – http://unihub.mdx.ac.uk/support/withdrawal
PST also play a key role in supporting your Programme Progression Boards (PPB). They are responsible for communicating progression decisions to students following the Boards, and are accessible all year round to explain progression decisions and their implications.
If a student is making enquiries regarding their progression decision and/or its implication or if they would like guidance on regulations around progression please refer them directly to PST using our quick and easy referral form.
