BUILDING DESIGN

The project focused on social inclusion. Initially various data were raised about the region covered by the new hospital

The choice of lining and shading materials also aimed to contribute to the heat exchange between the internal and external environment, reducing the energy spent on cooling the internal environment. Space on the roof has also been set aside for the purpose of solar energy capture, to heat water for consumption and heating.

Social inclusion The project also focused on social inclusion. Initially various data were raised about the region covered by the new hospital. These included a census of the local population; mapping of the most needed medical services in the region to guide the project; and age groups. With these elements the authors outlined the

project profile – A hospital of medium complexity. The low complexity part will be answered in the Basic Health Units in the region, who will refer patients to Restinga Extremo Sul Hospital. High complexity patients will receive initial care in the new hospital and will be later referred to specialised services of SUS. We opted for a conventional

construction system, avoiding prefabrication. This decision led to an increased need for labour in the construction, which provided greater

employment for the local population. People from the community have been

trained since the beginning of the work – carpentry, blacksmith, masons and plumbers courses – from which 84 construction professionals graduated. In addition to the construction team,

during the project implementation 600 other community members were also trained in technical courses in nursing and housekeeping. Currently, 52% of the new hospital working team (HRES) comes from the region.
