new buildings is related to the use of natural, artificial or hybrid ventilation “the availability of the resources and the cost of the system to provide the best control to counteract the risks”.2

North region The North region is the largest in region, with an area of nearly 3.9 million square kilometres, corresponding to around 45.7 per cent of national territory. The North region consists of seven states, with a population that exceeds 18 million, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistic (IBGE).

Floating hospital M2P Arquitetura e Engenharia, based in the coastal city of Belem, has designed a floating hospital concept to attend emergency situations in regions difficult to access by land. Here, the equipment is installed on a floating raft and transported by river - with the help of pushers - to its destination, to permanently or temporarily provide assistance. The option for the shallow hull raft

allows the structure to move in low draft regions, thus expanding its assistance scope. The modular solution allows the desired care profile to suit any medical need, depending on the response scenario. The arrangements can vary from a

large inpatient unit with 60 intensive care beds, with adaptable criticality allowing the patient’s stage of recovery in the bed itself (step-down recovery), to a 30-bed hospital of medium complexity with an operating/obstetric centre, basic imaging, and laboratory - in addition to the technical and logistical support sectors necessary for its operation. The air conditioning system is designed

to be in full compliance with technical standards of air quality and international safety.

North-east region The north-east region has a land area of approximately 1.5 million square kilometres and consists of nine states. The population exceeded 56 million as of 2019, according to IGBE.

78 For COVID-19, 20 ICU beds were

separated to receive patients diagnosed with the coronavirus and who have more severe disease. In the external area of the hospital, a 1,200 square metre field hospital was installed with 60 beds with air-conditioned structure, with air filters and air renewal.

Arena Fonte Nova campaign hospital Located in the city of Salvador in Bahia state, a 240-bed campaign hospital (100 ICU bed, 140 infirmary beds) was installed inside the Arena Fonte Nova football stadium. The main objective of the facility was to build a unit dedicated to serving COVID-19 by taking advantage of the covered and wide areas to install the beds. The hospitalisation beds were housed in

an existing pavilion with a covered area of 2,750 square metres, with wards and their respective support environments (utility room, satellite pharmacy, distribution pantry, wardrobe, pantry and comfort for employees and toilets). Some beds were installed in executive boxes.

Hospital do Subúrbio Inaugurated in 2010, Hospital do Subúrbio – also located in Salvador –was the first public-private partnership experience in the area of public health in Brazil. It is a state public general hospital, privately managed, with an acute and emergency profile for adult and pediatric patients. Altogether, there are 373 beds, of which

253 are hospital beds in the infirmary and 60 are in intensive care, the latter distributed in ten pediatric ICU beds and 50 beds for adult patients. The unit also has 60 beds under home

care. The hospital does not have open doors for screening COVID-19 patients. Patients are referred via the Regulation Centre and come from different parts of Bahia.
