power for the day-theatres at Crawley General Hospital,” says Brunton. “It required all our experience and engineering knowhow to devise and deliver a solution that met their urgent requirements and could be accommodated on the site. “Our ability to engineer a modular medical IT system, configuring the equipment to fit into the cramped space available was a vital factor in achieving the customer’s aims. A standard, out of the box system simply could not work within the confined location.” Within the same limited space, the engineering and installation team designed and commissioned two bespoke UPS-backed distribution boards equipped with Residual Current Monitoring technology (RCM), which feed general lighting circuits and other non-medical loads. Incorporation of RCM technology avoids the need to shut down when carrying out periodic inspection and testing, delivering huge operational and financial benefits in terms of reduced downtime and disruption. The system incorporates the

COMTRAXX MK2430 universal remote alarm indicator and test combination. The remote alarm units provide each theatre with a visual and audible indication of alarm messages from Bender systems, including medical IT and RCM data. It allows messages from third party

systems to be recorded and displayed on the MK2430, for example from medical gases or UPS systems, and enables testing of the IT system monitoring equipment using a programmable button.

Modular to the max Bender UK also played a key role in what could be seen as the ultimate application of modular principles to provide medical facilities – a complete self-contained operating theatre manufactured offsite and delivered by ModuleCo Healthcare to the Royal Lancaster Infirmary. The new £2.5m, state-of-the-art

operating theatre and recovery area is equipped with a safe and resilient medical IT critical power system, along with theatre equipment including Merivaara LED operating lights, services pendants, theatre touchscreen control panel and a PACS viewing screen supplied by Bender UK. The medical IT system was incorporated into the new modular unit, together with a battery-back-up UPS system. The building was delivered in sections

and craned into place on a prepared site adjacent to the existing operating theatres. It will provide extra capacity while the operating theatres are refurbished and will be integrated as part of the permanent surgical facilities once the upgrades are complete. and engineering company MTX and most recently supplied medical IT and UPS systems for an evolving three-storey, 70-bed modular unit at Hillingdon Hospital in north-west London. The unit – consisting of a 28-bed decant unit, a 26-bed respiratory unit and 16-bed ICU facility – is due to be handed over in early 2021.

Hillingdon Hospital is an acute and

specialist services provider to its local population and also provides emergency services to Heathrow Airport as the nearest hospital. It is operated by Hillingdon Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which in July 2020 announced proposals for a new hospital to be built on the site.

A modular building was therefore a prudent choice by the Trust to accommodate a decant ward to receive patients from other areas of the hospital, a respiratory unit so essential in dealing with COVID-19 patients, and an intensive care unit. The building can be rapidly deployed to provide additional facilities and will also offer additional flexibility as the plans for the new hospital progress. MTX, which specialises in delivering

innovative and sustainable solutions to the public and private sectors, was initially tasked by the NHS Trust to deliver a single storey, 28-bed ward with the facility to go multi storey in the future. However, due to the pandemic the initial single storey building was accelerated with the additional two floors added to the contract within four weeks and therefore installed immediately after the ground floor during the COVID-19 quarantine/lockdown period. The urgent need for the building

was one of the drivers for Bender UK’s modular-build Group 2 medical IT system that has the potential for a shorter lead time, in addition to offering more flexible configuration within the evolving facility. Working closely with MTX, the team

developed integrated medical IT and UPS solutions for each floor of the unit. The original ground floor facility

requirement was for 6 x 10kVA medical IT systems incorporating ATICS rapid changeover for added resilience, with programmable remote alarm panel and a pair of 60kVA Multi Sentry UPS units with batteries rated at 40kW for 60mins. The first floor required 8 x 10kVA and

4 x 6kVA medical IT units with remote alarm panels, and the second floor 6 x 10kVA medical IT units with remote alarm panels, all backed by a UPS system comprising of a pair of 125kVA units with batteries rated at 125kVA for 60 minutes. These UPS systems were supplied, installed and commissioned by Constant Power Services, one of Bender UK’s leading UPS partners in healthcare.

Conclusion The worldwide COVID-19 pandemic has seen an increasing focus on healthcare facilities and in particular those providing critical and intensive care. The drive to re-task existing areas, or upgrade facilities in often ageing health estates requires a flexible approach to those tasks and an ability to solve problems. It is a timely reminder that the basic principles of engineering – to invent, design, analyse, build and test complex systems to fulfil functional objectives and requirements – underpin the ability to provide flexible engineered solutions for healthcare facilities.
