Gunnar Baekken Norway General Secretary


maintenance of the group’s 52 hospitals comprising 8,700 inpatient beds in Southern Africa. His responsibilities include the maintenance of the complete facility between the foundation and the roof. Kevin has overseen upgrades to numerous facilities as Mediclinic – currently the third largest private healthcare provider in Southern Africa – took over smaller hospital groups. Most of the hospitals are acute general hospitals providing specialist-led care by independent medical practitioners. Kevin completed his Higher National Diploma in Mechanical Engineering at Cape Town Technicon in 1985. He was formerly a chairperson of the SAFHE (South African Federation of Healthcare Engineering) southern branch and held the position of SAFHE president from 2011 to 2012. He also serves on the IFHE Digest advisory panel. Kevin has a passion for mentoring people and has been involved with the upskilling of numerous students to technical manager level. He believes in ‘growing his own timber’ to ensure that the culture of the department is carried over to new employees entering the business. He is also involved in motivational speaking at primary school level to

Darryl Pitcher Darryl Pitcher is chief executive officer of Bethsalem Care and GreenBriars Village in Australia. Darryl has many years of experience in hospital engineering in the public and private sectors. He is a past president of the Institute of Hospital Engineering, Australia (IHEA). Previously he oversaw a ‘revamp’ of the IHEA website and The Australian Hospital Engineer journal.


Gunnar Baekken Gunnar Baekken is a past president of IFHE and past vice-president of the Norwegian Association of Biomedical Engineering and a past president of the Norwegian Association of Hospital Engineering (FSTL). He has also participated in national and international committees concerning hospital technology and facilities management, including the World Health Organization.

he was assistant director of estates and capital development with Sussex University Hospitals NHS Trust. During his time in Brighton, he took over the management of the apprentice training scheme and has been pleased to see many of the trainees succeed in gaining senior management positions within estate management in the health service. Since retiring, he has continued to


undertake consultancy work in estate and facilities management. Andy holds a full tech certificate in plant maintenance and works services, a certificate of the Institute of Works Managers and is an incorporated engineer and fellow of the Institute of Healthcare Engineering and Estate Management (IHEEM). Andy was an IHEEM council member and chair of the International Technical Platform from 2012 to 2017. He has been an IHEEM representative for the IFHE since 2008. In addition, he has been responsible for the publication of the IFHE Health Briefings and IFHE Digest since 2008. Away from work he is a member of Scouts and Lions International.


Steve Drinkrow Steve Drinkrow is past president of the International Federation of Healthcare Engineering (IFHE). Steve is the executive responsible for the greater infrastructure department tasked with engineering projects, maintenance and capital procurement for Mediclinic’s 52 hospitals in southern Africa. He has been in facilities engineering management for over 30 years, 25 of which have been in the hospital environment, with the Mediclinic Group. He qualified at the Cape Peninsula University of Technology in 1978 with a Higher Diploma in Mechanical Engineering.
