How Virginia stacks up


Virginia is known as a business-friendly state with an educated and highly skilled workforce. It regularly is included in prestigious national surveys. Below are examples of the commonwealth’s top accolades.


 Virginia placed fi rst in CNBC’s latest list of “America’s Top States for Business.” It was No. 1 among the 50 states for the fi rst time since 2011. T e landing of Amazon’s second headquarters in Arlington County and Alexandria, as well as a highly educated workforce, plac- es us on top, according to CNBC.


 T e Old Dominion rose to No. 4 on Forbes magazine’s most recent “Best States for Business” list. Virginia comes in fi rst in the nation for its regulatory en- vironment and its quality of life, and places third for labor supply. Forbes emphasized Virginia’s diverse economy, which includes federal and local government, manufacturing, farming and mili-

tary sectors, as well as its generous incentive off erings and business- friendly regulatory environment.


 Business Facilities’ 14th Annual Rankings list placed Virginia second in cybersecurity jobs, just behind California, while noting that the state is the top U.S. data center hub. T e new edition of the list came out in late July, after this issue went to press.


 T e commonwealth ranks No. 7 in Site Selection magazine’s latest “Top State Business Climate” list. T e state scored highly in com- petitiveness and improved upon its new-plant-per-capita ranking, rising from the 18th to the fourth spot. T e rankings are a 50/50 mix of objective and subjective measures.

 T e commonwealth ranked No. 13 on Chief Executive Magazine’s 2019 “Best & Worst States for Business” list, which is based on a CEO opin- ion survey. Virginia, which moved up two places from 2018, has a healthy tech sector, with the Amazon HQ2 deal in Northern Virginia and Face- book’s planned expansion of its data center in Henrico County.


 Virginia was listed as the sixth-most educated state in WalletHub’s 2019 “Most and Least Educated States” ranking. Virginia is the state with the fourth-highest percentage of gradu- ate or professional degree holders. To compile the ranking, WalletHub examined educational attainment, school quality and achievement gaps between genders and races.
