Military Medics Like Katelyn Are Putting Skills To Work In Civilian Health Care

Katelyn Newman, who serves part-time as a combat medic in the Virginia Army National Guard, is an Emergency Department Technician at Sentara CarePlex Hospital in Hampton. She was hired as a result of the Virginia Department of Veterans Services’ innovative Military Medics and Corpsmen (MMAC) Program.

The MMAC team recruits and refers candidates to partner health care employers like Sentara and other medical service providers statewide. Each allows qualified MMAC applicants to apply their extensive clinical skills and experience under supervision while obtaining required civilian clinical credentials.

MMAC provides a clear path for these highly trained and skilled military veterans to find job opportunities in civilian healthcare. Created in 2016, it is the first and only such program in America.

To learn more about the Virginia Department of Veterans Services MMAC Program and how it is expanding to include more healthcare providers throughout Virginia, please visit www.dvs.virginia.gov.
