VIRGINIA BUSINESS SITE LOCATOR Big Deals


Virginia has landed some major economic development coups lately. Below is a sample of projects announced in 2018 and 2019, which were expected to create at least 100 jobs.


CENTRAL VIRGINIA


Chesterfield County: The Results Cos. is calling on Chesterfield County again for a new call center. The Fort Lauderdale, Fla.-based company is investing $1.5 million to add a second call center in the county, which will create 600 jobs.


Henrico County: Facebook is building a data center at the White Oak Technology Park. The social media company is investing $1.5 billion in the project. More than 1,300 construction workers have been hired to build the complex. The data center will employ 200 people once it opens in 2020.


Powhatan County: Classic Granite & Marble, a natural stone fabrication and installation company, plans to move its headquarters from Chesterfield to Powhatan County in January. The company will create 100 jobs in Powhatan over five years.


HAMPTON ROADS


Newport News: Newport News Shipbuilding plans to hire 7,000 employees over five years, including 2,000 new positions. More than 22,000 employees currently work at the shipyard, making it the state’s largest industrial employer.


Suffolk: Last year, Target expanded its Suffolk distribution center. The $2.9 million investment added 225 jobs. Target’s local facility serves multiple distribution centers and 650 stores on the East Coast.


Virginia Beach: SPARQ Global LLC is investing $20 million to upfit its facility. The Virginia Beach-based cybersecurity company expects to create 250 local jobs by 2022.


S6 AUGUST 2019 NORTHERN VIRGINIA


Arlington County and Alexandria: Amazon picked Arlington County and Alexandria late last year for its coveted East Coast headquarters known as HQ2. The internet giant’s investing $2.5 billion in the project, which is expected to yield 25,000 high-paying jobs over the next decade.


Fairfax County: Appian recently moved its headquarters from multiple sites in Reston to a building in Tysons. The software provider plans to add 600 jobs there over the next five years. It’s investing more than $30 million in the expansion.


Loudoun County: Last year, Discovery Inc., the media company behind the Discovery Channel and the Food Network, announced a $16 million expansion in Loud- oun County that’s expected to create 240 jobs. The company delivers more than 8,000 hours of programming each year in 220 countries and territories. Its brands include HGTV, TLC and the Travel Channel.


SOUTHERN VIRGINIA


Danville: Idaho-based Litehouse Inc. recently purchased Danville-based Sky Valley Foods for $46 million. Sky Valley makes organic dressings, marinades, condiments and sauces.


Litehouse will more than quadruple Sky Valley’s local workforce, adding 160 new positions.


Henry County: Monogram Food Solutions LLC is once again growing in Henry County. Last year, the company announced a $30 million expansion of Monogram Snacks, a move expected to add 300 jobs. This is the Memphis-based food manufacturer’s fourth expansion since coming to the county in 2009.


Pittsylvania County: Panaceutics, a manufacturer of personalized medical and nutritional products based in North Carolina’s Research Triangle Park, announced plans last year to establish a research and development and high-tech manufacturing facility in Pittsylvania County. The facility in Pittsylvania’s Ringgold East Industrial Park is expected to create 70 jobs. The company is investing $5.8 million in the project.


SHENANDOAH VALLEY


Frederick County: CareerBuilder has set up a call center in Frederick County. In mid-June, the company told The Winchester Star it was halfway to its goal of hiring 300 people locally. When the deal


was announced in January, the Chicago-based company said it planned to invest $2.5 million to establish the facility. Since its start nearly 25 years ago, CareerBuilder has helped more than 25,000 global customers find, hire and orient new employees.


Rockingham County: Merck & Co. is embarking on a $1 billion expansion of its Elkton plant over the next three years. The global pharmaceutical manufacturer will increase production of its human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines. The move is expected to add 100 local jobs, bringing the plant’s employment to 1,000.


SOUTHWEST VIRGINIA


Montgomery County: Reston- based 1901 Group will invest $4 million to expand by 2021. The company’s adding 225 jobs at its home base in Northern Virginia and 580 positions in Montgomery County, where it primarily serves government agencies.


Pulaski County: Volvo Trucks — the largest private employer in the New River Val- ley — will add 777 jobs within six years at its Dublin plant. In addition to creating new posi- tions, the company’s adding a 350,000-square-foot facility to its campus.
