good, solid, positive safety culture that is respected and adhered to. Regular training is key and ensures competence and good practice.

WHAT TO DO? Whenever employees are working at height the following should be assessed:

• Establish the risks and eliminate any potential hazards

• Plan, organise and supervise the work and ensure all is carried out in a safe manner

• Ensure competency with all the workers on site

• Make sure the working area is safe from loose material that could fall, as well as offering features to prevent a fall, such as a railing when possible

• Inspect and maintain work and safety equipment on each use or as appropriate

• Consider the weather conditions and don’t work if unsafe to do so – high winds etc

• Create a plan for dealing with emergencies and for rescues

AVOIDING THE SCAFFOLD We are lucky in that our unique exterior cleaning process, ‘façade gommage’ does not require the use of scaffold so our workers are largely working from a cabin instead. Height

is still an issue and should be respected, but the enclosed environment makes them less vulnerable.

Managing Director at Thomann-Hanry, Mark Styles, feels the property industry should do more to avoid the use of scaffold unless necessary. He says: “In the building cleaning industry today the use of scaffold is largely avoidable, bringing huge benefits to the safety of workers who can instead work from the more secure environment of an enclosed cabin. With frequent incidents, the reassurance of cleaning a building without the use of scaffold is appealing to the workforce as well as the proprietor. We want to highlight this and help re-enforce this message across the industry.”

In addition to the safety implications, avoiding unsightly scaffold when exterior cleaning work takes place ensures business can run as usual, minimising loss of trade, maximising profit potential and maintaining an ‘as normal’ functionality, whatever the business - especially beneficial to those in retail or hospitality trade.

Thomann-Hanry is currently cleaning the Sofitel Hotel on Pall Mall – as a five star international hotel it is paramount that the work was undertaken quickly, without affecting the residents or room occupancy. The lack of scaffold also ensures vastly improved security during the operational period, a benefit to the hotel industry, as well as banks and other institutions.

With leading businesses choosing scaffold-free exterior cleaning options for trade and security benefits, with the added reassurance of safer working practices, when considering your façade maintenance look no further than Thomann-Hanry.
