VEGAS TECH SHOW The Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas has this year unveiled an ‘intelligent’ toilet that supposedly only needs to be cleaned once a year.

The futuristic toilet has built-in sensors meaning that it opens as you approach it, and self-cleans with every flush.

An aerated wand, which delivers warm water and warm air while the user is sitting also means that it eliminates the need for toilet paper.


FOR THE QUEEN’ A new campaign has been launched by Keep Britain Tidy, in association with Country Life Magazine, to clean up Britain in time for the Queen’s 90th birthday in April.

The ‘Clean for the Queen’ campaign will aim to ‘rally an army of volunteers’ up and down the country to clean up their local areas, with a special clean- up weekend planned on March 4-6.

Alongside the backing of Keep Britain Tidy, the campaign already has the support of many well-known national organisations, and a total membership already in excess of 1.5 million.

Speaking of the campaign, Environment Minister Rory Stewart said: “Her Majesty the Queen is an inspiration to all of us. Her 90th birthday is a unique opportunity for people to come together in celebration of Her Majesty’s long service and dedication to this country.

“Everyone has a responsibility to keep their community tidy and this campaign provides us with a great chance to protect our wildlife and improve the quality of our streets and public spaces. I hope it will help lead to a lasting legacy of a cleaner, tidier Britain.”

After usage, the toilet cleans and sanitises itself with electrolysed water, and because of a special coating of titanium dioxide and zirconium, nothing sticks to the bowl. Manufacturers Toto say that this means the toilet can effectively go for a whole year without needing to be cleaned.

Spokeswoman Lenora Campos said: “Once it flushes, it sprays the interior of the bowl with electrolysed water. This bleaches the interior, killing anything in the bowl.”

Created by Japanese manufacturers Toto, the Neorest toilet is still in the development stage, although they are

confident it will be a hit, as more than 40 million earlier versions have been sold, despite a price tag of $9,800 (around £6,700).

While these ‘techno-toilets’ are not particularly revolutionary in Japan – according to Lenora, around 70% of Japanese homes use this kind of washlet system – the notion is gaining ground elsewhere and Toto has been selling previous versions in the US and Europe.

The new Neorest model is set to be introduced to the European market later this year, with plans to move into the US in 2017.

The first national anti-litter campaign was carried out in 1953 – the year of the Queen’s coronation – and it was soon followed by the establishment of Keep Britain Tidy. Adrian Evans, Campaign Director, who ran the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee River Pageant in 2012, believes it is therefore appropriate that the

nation once again bands together in celebration of her 90th birthday.

Speaking on the campaign website, he said: “We aim to inspire a million people to take action and enjoy a few hours together litter-picking to make the places where we live more beautiful.

“For her, and for us all, we want to attack the blight of litter and reclaim our beautiful countryside, our fabulous cities, our world class parks, our wonderful beaches and waterways.”
