Loretto Care - Issue 1, December 2016


We all know the impact a strong leader can have on an organisation, and in the ever-changing social care environment, supporting and nurturing leadership skills is more important than ever.

Like many, Loretto Care has faced many challenges and changes since we came into being in 1977 as a provider of housing and specialist housing.

In 1982 our first care service was established supporting individuals with learning disabilities to live within their communities. At this point we had 12 staff.

Today we have 17 Registered Services across 83 different sites based in 10 local authorities and our 470 staff support more than 2000 people a week, delivering a range of highly personalised services. We are now part of Wheatley Group, Scotland’s leading housing, care and property-management group.

Our leadership journey has evolved throughout all of these years as we have responded to the political and economic

environment and looked for solutions which put people at the heart of everything we do.

But in the past few years, against a backdrop of increased regulation, public sector reform and reduced finances, we have had to become more innovative than ever before in how we deliver personalised support and develop our staff.

This has given us the impetus to introduce fresh thinking. At the heart of that thinking, we have embraced the idea of everyone as a leader in their life, as recognised in the leadership strategy for social services in Scotland.

Embedding that idea across the organisation through Step into Leadership has so far been a rewarding journey.
