Felixstowe and Harwich unveil freeport plans

Setting aside its current congestion problems, Hutchison Ports has set out its vision for a new freeport at Felixstowe and Harwich International ports, as part of the current government consultations on creating

of up to ten such hubs across the country. Freeport East would be a manufacturing, green energy and innovation hub with strong road and rail links to the Midlands and the North of England.

Freight Break 36

Shipping lines are becoming reluctant to take on UK-bound cargo because of the growing difficulties in UK ports while freight rate increases and surcharges that have driven costs to new heights, says

forwarders and analysts. While the problems

are widespread, the UK is particularly

affected, mainly

due to the serious port congestion at Felixstowe which has had a knock-on effect at all

other UK ports. One UK importer said

that the Ocean Alliance had reduced all bookings and UK slot allocations by 60% and that other shipping lines were expected to quickly follow.

Some carriers are also looking to introduce a Southampton port congestion surcharge, similar to that already imposed for Felixstowe. It also said that other UK main and feeder ports were at or close to breaking point. The importer also claimed

that 15-20,000 containers full of PPE for the NHS were sat in Felixstowe awaiting warehouse delivery slots. S h i ppi ng
