Raising Up the Down-Trodden -- A Sewing School & Water Wells
“Come, and let us return unto the Lord: for He hath torn, and He will heal us; He hath smitten, and He will bind us up. After two days will He revive us: in the third day He will raise us up, and we shall live in His sight.” – Hosea 6:1-2
Dear WME Partners and Supporters,
IN INDIA, LIFE CAN BE UNBELIEVABLY HARSH AND MERCILESS FOR THE POOR. Their lives are blackened by constant disappointment and cruel callousness. Hope dwindles as the days pass by while nothing seems to improve.
That’s why solid Christian outreach can make such a huge impact. When these down-trodden people witness the love and compassion shown by believers first- hand through practical projects that have a real tangible impact, it opens wide the door to sharing the life-giving message of Jesus Christ with them.
Let me tell you about an outreach that WME is involved with in a town outside the city of Vijayawada that is using a vocational school and water wells to change lives.
Local Christian believers operate the Rehoboth Sewing School. They financially support on average 10 impoverished women for 6 months while the women learn sewing skills. During training, these women regularly attend a Bible study where they hear the Gospel. Many accept Jesus and are baptized. After 6 months, each graduate receives a free sewing machine. These women now can financially support their families, and the local community is seeing what God has done for them. With their new skills, they can share the Gospel with customers.
One of the former students whose life was dramatically changed through the Rehoboth Sewing School.
This is the testimony of one young woman whose life has been transformed:
MY NAME IS KASARAPU. I STUDIED UP TO THE 5TH GRADE. MY PARENTS WORKED AS BRICK MAKERS. I TOO WORKED AS A CHILD LABORER. I GOT MARRIED AT THE AGE OF 18. MY FATHER-IN-LAW AND MOTHER-IN-LAW USED TO DO HINDU WORSHIP OFTEN. MY HUSBAND USED TO DRINK ALCOHOL DAILY AND BEAT ME VERY SEVERELY. BECAUSE MY HUSBAND WAS PHYSICALLY BEATING ME DAILY, I WOULD LEAVE TO STAY AT MY PARENTS’ HOUSE MANY TIMES TO PROTECT MYSELF FROM HIM. I HAVE 3 CHILDREN, 1 BOY AND 2 GIRLS.
ONE DAY THE LOCALPASTOR CAME TO MY HOUSE, SHARED THEGOSPELWITH MY HUSBAND AND ME, AND PRAYED FOR US. THEGOSPEL CHANGED MY HUSBAND— HE IS NOT DRINKING ANY MORE. MY HUSBAND AND I WERE BAPTIZED, AND WE ARE LIVING IN PEACE.
WE HAVE HAD FINANCIAL PROBLEMS. I HEARD ABOUTREHOBOTH SEWING SCHOOL. THERE I WAS TAUGHT TAILORING, AND NOWI CAN MAKE SOME INCOME TO TAKE CARE OF MY NEEDS. PLEASE PRAY FOR US SO THAT WE LIVE A CHRIST-CENTERED LIFE IN OUR NEIGHBORHOOD.

Another area for outreach in this part of India is providing clean water. You see, there are millions of people in India who do not have access to safe drinking
