a new car arrive on his driveway every week as the car companies have a press fleet which goes out to journalists to review. Nick says the constant flow of new cars was a novelty at first and attracted a bit of attention from the neighbours but everyone soon gets used to it. “I’ve been lucky enough to drive all kinds of cars all over the world - Africa, the USA and Europe. The only car I’ve never test driven is a Ferrari, I’m not a big fan so it’s not on my ‘to do’ list but it might be nice to try one!” Nick’s own car is a Citroën Picasso: “I need my own ‘sensible’ car as I have to fit my German Shepherd Flynn in the back and he can come with a bit of mud!” Nick says electric cars will have a dramatic effect on motoring in the next 10 years as petrol and diesel cars are done away with. “They will become museum piec- es! Fuel companies will only concentrate on aviation and military fields as there won’t be a private motoring market. There are so many more plug-in stations now compared to two years ago and some electric cars are doing 200 miles on one charge.” Nick writes in his office at the back of his house at

Hillhead. He says you don’t need an extravagant writ- ing desk and a magnificent view to motivate you, just a comfy chair and lots of inspiration: “Roald Dahl wrote whilst sitting in his old armchair in his shed and look what he created,” he says with a smile. Nick believes he has done most things he wants in life but would quite like to get on the Waterstones Best Sellers List - so that’s the aim for the next couple of years!
