LIVE 24-SEVEN BEV BEVAN'S

CD PICKS - DECEMBER 2019 American Tunes – Songs by Paul Simon (ACE)

Paul Simon is one of my all-time favourite singer / songwriters and his lyrics in particular are sublimely brilliant. I write many of the lyrics on new songs with my band Quill and I would like to believe that one day I might write song lyrics as good as Paul Simon’s.

There are 23 songs in all on this excellent compilation CD and the tracks embrace five decades in Paul Simon’s ongoing career, demonstrating how comfortably his songs span the genres.

Amongst a host of gems you will find: I Am A Rock (The Hollies); Homeward Bound (Cher); The 59th Street Bridge Song – Feeling Groovy (Harpers Bizarre); The Sound Of Silence (Peaches & Herb); Cecilia (Smokey Robinson and the Miracles); The Boxer (Emmy-Lou Harris); Keep The Customer Satisfied (Marsha Hunt); American Tune (Shawn Colvin; Something So Right (Annie Lennox;) Long Long Day (Rumer); Graceland (Willie Nelson); A Hazy Shade of Winter (The Bangles).

Great stuff!

The Peanut Butter Falcon – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (Varese Sarabande) The original motion picture soundtrack for The Peanut Butter Falcon is now released to coincide with the film’s UK release. It is a spirited and eclectic collection of American music that evokes the exhilaration of an open-ended road trip. It includes bluegrass, gospel, country, rockabilly, folk and indie rock from a diverse range of artists and composers. The score is composed by Zachary Dawes,

Noam Pikelny, Jonathan Sadoff and Gabe Witcher. 104

Songs from the soundtrack include: Uncloudy Day (The Staple Singers); You Led Me To The Wrong and Where The Wild Wild Flowers Grow (Ola Belle Reed); Whippoorwills (Chance McCoy); This Heartache (The Time Jumpers); Long Hot Summer Days (Sara Watkins); and the outstanding The Stable Song (Gregory Isakov with the Colorado Orchestra).

The Peanut Butter Falcon movie tells the story of a young man with Down Syndrome, who runs away from a residential nursing home to follow his dream of attending a professional wrestling school. A strange turn of events pairs him on the road with a small time outlaw on the run, who becomes his unlikely coach and ally.

I rarely review soundtracks so didn’t know quite what to expect. I must say that I was much impressed by the music on this album; it is evocative, moving and atmospheric and has made me now very much want to see this movie.

Quill – Ghosts of Christmas (Bandcamp) Don’t miss this brand new album from long-established Midland’s-based folk/rock outfit Quill.

This exciting new band line-up made its debut in October, playing two nights at the Rose Theatre in Kidderminster, to standing ovations.

The new-look Quill consists of long-standing group members Joy Strachan-Brain on lead vocals and Katie McWilliam on violin, former Robert Plant drummer Andy Edwards, award-winning prog rock bassist John Jowitt, Abby Brant on keyboards, Lee Evans on lead guitar (both from Bev Bevan’s Stand Up And Rock Band) and myself on percussion and drums.

There are ten tracks in all on this latest release, including the self-composed tracks Ghosts of Christmas; Nine Mile Camp; Elephant in the Room and Grey Goose Call. Then enjoy the quirky and stylised cover versions of Pete Seeger’s Belles of Rhymney; Steve Winwood’s Find My Way Back Home; Murray Head’s Say It Ain’t So; and Al Green’s Take Me to the River. There’s also homage to two of my former bands, The Move and Black Sabbath, with Quillish adaptations of Blackberry Way and Heaven and Hell.
