Severe Cyclone “Fani” Brings Damage to WME Centers in India

“The floods have lifted up, O LORD, the floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The LORD on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, yea, than the mighty waves of the sea.” – Psalm 93:3-4

Dear WME Partners and Supporters,

In May, Cyclone Fani moved over the Bay of Bengal toward the eastern coastline of India. The severe storm threatened India’s eastern shore with sustained wind speeds of 150 mph. This was the most intense landfall seen in the Indian state of Odisha (formerly known as Orissa) in nearly 20 years. Because of the storm’s severity, the government evacuated over 1 million people.

WE KNOW THESE PEOPLE AND THIS AREA WELL. IN FACT, WME HAS WORKED DILIGENTLY IN ODISHA FOR OVER 4 DECADES. Our Native Missionaries, WME children, and area supervisors in Odisha knew they were in harm’s way. They prayerfully watched and waited to see the outcome of the intense storm barreling toward them.

Initially, communication was all but impossible. We prayed and stood by for some word…any word… on what had happened. Finally, we received a report from our committed people on the ground. First, we give thanks to God for preserving lives at all our WME centers in Odisha. We had no fatalities! Yet two WME centers saw significant damage. We need your help to raise up, restore, and send aid to our Christian brothers and sisters as they work to recover.

In Bhubaneswar, the capital city of Odisha, the WME Children’s Home, a WME Church and our Medical Clinic that treats lepers were all pummeled by massive rain and winds. An overview of the damage is described below.

THE INTENSE STORM SMASHED DOORS, WINDOWS AND PORTIONS OF THE ROOF AT THEWME

LEPER CLINIC. MEDICAL SUPPLIES WERE RUINED AND MUST BE REPLACED. THEWME CHURCH WAS AFFECTED AND WILL REQUIRE A NEW ROOF AND WINDOWS. THEWME CHILDREN’S HOME

NEEDS SOME MAJOR REPAIRS, INCLUDING RE-BUILDING THE KITCHEN AND REPLACING THE SECURITY WALL WHICH COLLAPSED WHEN SLAMMED BY UPROOTED TREES. STAFF AT THEWME MEDICAL CLINIC ANDWME HOME HAVE LOST THEIR BELONGINGS, INCLUDING CLOTHING, UTENSILS AND HOUSEHOLD ITEMS.

At our Bhubaneswar Children's Home, the main building, kitchen and security wall were all badly damaged by the storm.

The work of God’s Kingdom must continue at these WME centers. Feeding children from our Home is a daunting task without a working kitchen. And with many suffering, our medical clinic to lepers is more vital than ever. Your gifts and support are critical in helping rebuild lives after the destruction left behind by Cyclone Fani.
