May 2019 will see the eighth year of NABMA’s Love Your Local Market campaign, an annual nationwide (and international) event aimed at raising the profile of our traditional indoor, outdoor, street and wholesale markets. L Y LM b e g a n a s a celebration of market culture in the UK, and since 2012 over 1,000 markets have put on nearly 7,000 events during the festival and pledged over 10,000 pitches to start-ups to test-trade. The idea of LYLM is to provide a fun and interactive initiative or series of events on the market which can bring together market managers, market traders and shoppers. LYLM activities can be held

at any time during the month of May, the official month of the campaign, which is primarily social media driven to get consumers actively talking about their local market. This means traders need

to be active on social media so that they can make use of the campaign to apply special offers, discounts and promotions over the two week period. LYLM has been so successful it has now been embraced by 24 different countries worldwide, and

NABMA estimates that the campaign has given over 11,000 people the chance to sample market trading and has created at least 1,000 new businesses. This year’s theme – Markets

Close To Your Heart – has been adopted by NABMA and the World Union of Wholesale Markets (which has supported LYLM since 2014), and this gives participants the opportunity of adopting a flexible approach to the activities they wish to organise. Hundreds of markets across the UK took part in NABMA’s Gala Tent- sponsored campaign in 2018, with markets from Scotland to Cornwall participating in social media conversations online, making contact with new customers, showcasing produce and promoting the

stories of long established and new traders. Social media followers increased by 12.6 percent, attracting 35.1 million impressions and 5,174 engagements using the hash tags #LYLM2018, to give out positive messages, offers and new trader incentives. There were 2,000 market

days of activity across the fortnight, and the advertising value equivalency of the local, regional and national news coverage was measured at around three quarters of a million pounds. NABMA Chief Executive Graham Wilson OBE is delighted with the growing response to the campaign. He said: “By taking part

in Love Your Local Market, markets are supporting the whole industry to put us on the

national news agenda. It’s the one time each year when we link arms with markets across the globe in 25 countries.” Market towns up and down

the country found various ways of celebrating and promoting Love Your Local Market fortnight last year. Grimsby Top Town market

held a Royal Wedding special event amongst other entertainments, while would-be market traders in Colwyn Bay were offered a low cost opportunity to test the water as £15 market pitches were reduced to £5 for a limited start up period. Market traders in Keighley

handed out £5 vouchers to spend at the market until the end of October, while a popular night market returned to the market square in Cambridge, and the following

day there was a free screening of the royal wedding and stalls in the market square were decked out in Union Flag bunting to celebrate the occasion.

Anyone can get involved in

the LYLM campaign, and a wealth of information on how to go about it can be found on the NABMA website.
