Cake Fridays Talent show

‘We wanted an opportunity to showcase the talent and skills of the children in our school, so decided to hold a talent show, entitled “Oakley’s Got Talent”. We started planning around six weeks in advance. We put

sign-up sheets in every classroom and followed this up with a letter to parents advising that their child had shown an interest in entering. We asked parents to give consent for their child to take part and for confirmation of their act and whether it was going to be a solo performance or as part of a group. We also said that parents would need to provide the music and any costumes. We’re a small school, so anyone who wanted to enter could. Some children even did more than one act – one solo and one as part of a group. Our only costs were printing certificates for the children

(everyone who entered got one) and medals for the winners of each age group. We did not seek sponsorship for this. We promoted the show on our Facebook page, noticeboard and in the school newsletter. We sold tickets via letters to parents, and they cost £2 for adults and £1 for children, with participants attending for free. The event was held in the school hall on a Friday evening

and lasted around two hours. We asked for participants to be brought to school 15 minutes before the event began. We enlisted two Year 5 children to be the hosts and they introduced all the acts. It was a great night and very special to see the children perform. We saw some talents not necessarily seen during the

normal school day, including karate and comedy, as well as singing and dancing. The teaching staff also performed a dance, which the children absolutely loved! To boost profits, we ran a bar and a raffle, and when it

came to the vote, the audience voted for their favourite acts via voting sheets. We made £160 profit in total.’ Amy Cox, co-chair, Friends of Oakley School, Oakley CofE Combined School, Oakley, Buckinghamshire (90 pupils)

‘We hold our “Cake Friday” once a month. The idea came from when I worked in a small school, which held a similar event where parents donated baked or bought cakes and we sold them. I introduced the idea at my children’s school and tweaked it as we have a lot more pupils. We hold the sale once a month, and a different class is responsible for the sale each time, giving everyone a chance to be involved and meaning people can have a rest when it’s not their turn. Whichever class teacher is responsible for the sale receives the profits to spend on resources for their class. In September we create a calendar for the

sales, normally held on the last Friday of each month. We have a Facebook page and we use the Dojo app to send out reminders, plus most helpers put it on their personal Facebook page. The stall is set up outside at 2:50pm and

parents help set up and sell. The sale is usually finished and put away within an hour. If it’s raining we use the hall or community room. We charge £1 for lovely homemade cupcakes, and 25p-50p for others, depending on size and design. As cakes are donated by parents there are no costs for us. We’ve raised anything from £57 to £180 per sale, but our average is £120. Some classes have used the funds to buy building blocks and maths equipment. Some teachers didn’t spend their money last year so we split it 13 ways and gave each teacher the same amount at the beginning of this school year. We felt this was fair as then all the teachers had the money in September for the year ahead. I would definitely recommend this as a
