Spring opening for revamped market

A date has been set for the opening of a market in a South Yorkshire town following an ongoing major revamp. Council chiefs in Doncaster

are confident that the refurbished Wool Market will be ready and fully operational for a soft launch on Tuesday March 26, 2019, prior to an official opening the following weekend. The overhaul of the iconic

market has been a key project in the council’s ambitious development masterplan for the town, and is expected to cost around £7.6m, with around £3 coming from Sheffield City Region funding. The opening will be

attended by Doncaster Mayor Ros Jones and South York- shire metro mayor Dan Jarvis. The aim of the work is to

transform the market area into a vibrant and bustling location all week long and into the evenings. As part of the plans, the

renovated Wool Market will become “an attractive and welcoming destination providing a new and enhanced offer to retail traders and customers”. The makeover will also

enable the market to host more events, encouraging more people to visit the area. Plans also include a complete redesign of the

retain the heritage of the Wool Market whilst bringing the facility firmly into the 21st century. Drew Oxley, head of trading services at the council, told local media: “The citizens of Doncaster will benefit from a full and modern market offer that will include a stage area to showcase demonstrations and events. “The investment in the Wool Market, market car park and Corn Exchange will future proof the buildings and estate for the enjoyment of future generations.”

the council is overseeing the delivery of a new library and museum, cinema and restaurants, street improvements to the town’s Hall Gate and Silver Street and a revamp of the railway station forecourt area. The vision of the council, as explained on the authority’s website, is: • Ensuring the centre is a focus for business and enterprise.

• Building on the success of the current markets and raising the aspirations and functions of the markets. • Recognising the city

core as the heart of the economy and the borough and the place where the image of Doncaster is most clearly reflected.

• Enhancing green spaces and waterways to create a better setting for visitors, investments and city heritage.

• Developing the cultural quarter and reinforcing the retail and leisure core through bet ter links and public space improvements.

• Developing city-scale functions and assets, to become a stronger draw for business, workers, visitors and inward investment.

• Developing and bidding for new cultural venues and assets like University

and Research and Development facilities.

• Ensuring Doncaster as a location of choice for regional businesses.

A bidding process to seek

tender of the running of the market is already underway, and council cabinet members will have the final say on the successful bidder in January 2019.
