ANOTHER BUSY AUTUMN AT ‘CHANGES’ GYM ~ SPORTSTREK COACHING ~

September is one of the busiest months for gyms, with the nights darker, children back to school and the realisation when we look at our waistline that we have enjoyed the summer a little too much.

A lot of us will look for a new routine and fitness programme, which unfortunately a lot of people will have given it up before Halloween!

So how can people keep on track?

First of all, prepare yourself for the Changes that you want to take place. If this is losing weight or getting fitter, be clear in your mind why you want these Changes. Prepare by making lifestyle adjustments first. Extra walking, less alcohol and early to bed, are all a good start.

Next, set a goal, keeping it realistic. Don’t think of losing stones, think more about losing pounds. Don’t think about running a half marathon, when its years since you ran down the road!

Finally, once the goal is achieved, give yourself a reward and celebrate. A glass of wine or a night out! This will keep you extrinsically motivated to set and tackle the next goal!

At our ‘Changes’ gym at Embleton Spa, we offer one-week trials, where we can set the initial goal together during two gentle gym introductions. On joining (if it is for you – no hard sell from us) we then embark on the next stages. The prepare for Changes stage is the first two weeks of your programme, where you will train very easily to build up a fitness base. During this stage, we can also introduce you to one of our personal circuit sessions, where we discard the programme card and take part in a 20-30 min resistance circuit working for a time on each exercise, rather than a number of reps. Very popular with our members and free for all.

Not compulsory but next, is the fitness and health tests, where the results help determine the initial goal setting. This could be to lose some belly inches, or to improve at a fitness challenge in the gym. The rewards stage comes later, usually six weeks later, after the repeat fitness tests, where your first progressions should be recorded.

We hope to see you make some Changes at our gym at Embleton very soon.

TRAVELLING THE WORLD! ~ DERWENT GIRLGUIDING COCKERMOUTH & KESWICK ~

Being a young leader at brownies isn’t all biscuits and Haribo’s but they do appear a lot! My name is Megan and I volunteer as a young leader at Brigham Brownies.

I really enjoy being part of Girlguiding, as I can pass on my enjoyment as well as my experience of Guiding to the girls I work with. Guiding has encouraged me to go out and try new things. Girlguiding has given me endless opportunities to make new friends outside of the unit such as Camp, PGL and Big Gigs. I enjoy being able to help new brownies settle in, make new friends and it’s fantastic watching their confidence grow. I love to help take the girls out on trips and go on overnighters and camps. The overnighter for the girls was packed full of fun activities, such as baking, Hama beads and other exciting crafts. The girls love to do craft activities, as it brings out their personalities and enables them to express themselves.

As a young leader, I am completing my leadership qualification and receive the correct training related to the qualification. Going to help at brownies, gets me out the house and socialising with new people. It also helps with communication skills and will be very useful when it comes to my working life,

as I need to be able to help people in difficult situations. Guiding helps build teamwork skills, which is helpful for any job that requires you to work as part of a team.

Could you help inspire the next generation?

We have groups of Rainbows (age 5 to 7), Brownies (age 7 to 10), Guides (age 10 to 14) and Rangers (age 14 to 18). Any girls or adults interested in joining us, should visit www.girlguiding.org.uk/joinus
