Autumn is here, and the winter woollies are being dug out, including nice cosy socks. It’s important to wear the right socks for the right occasion. Good fitting

shoes, applying cream and having regular footcare can help keep your feet healthy but having the right socks is vital too.

Here’s some sock information that might help you make better sock choices:

• Affordability Cheap socks often use poor quality, manmade fibres and have poor durability and bad moisture management. This can lead to excess perspiration and increased bacteria and therefore odour, often resulting in fungal infections/athletes’ foot. They don’t generally last long making bad financial sense too

• Natural fibres Cotton or Bamboo socks are better in warmer weather. Wool/Bamboo socks are better in winter/cooler climates – but both can be worn all year round. Both offer good moisture management and comfort.

A local Postman has recently cured his athletes’

foot infection by wearing a pair of my knitted socks made by one of my patients

That very dear patient of mine is now knitting beautiful wool socks which we are hoping to be able to sell in my clinic and donate some funds to her chosen charity, the Breast Clinic at Whitehaven Hospital. Limited availability

• Sizing Sizing is important when buying, too big may cause creases underfoot and too tight would be uncomfortable and restrict circulation

• Elastic content Lycra/Elastane are two of the best elastics, don’t buy anything else and avoid anything with more than 5% except on medical or compression type socks if prescribed for a condition

• Non-elastic Perfect for people with diabetes, poor circulation, obesity, ulcers and swollen or large ankles. The knitted ones are perfect for this kind of foot

If you need ‘sock advice’, fancy buying natural fibre Bamboo socks or the amazingly-lovely knitted woollen socks, please just give the practice a call on 01900 826980, or pop in to see what we have available.
