KEEPING YOU IN TOUCH - YOUR FREE MONTHLY NEWSPAPER DELIVERED DOOR-TO-DOOR FOR 31 YEARS PERCY HOUSE GALLERY FRIENDS OF HIGHAM SCHOLARSHIP

This past year, the Friends of Higham have funded a special scholarship supporting the work of one selected individual. Kay Leech from South Cumbria was chosen and has attended ten of our residential courses over the past year, incorporating elements of her learning into a range of textile works. Kay chose courses she had not done before, so that fresh ideas and learning could be introduced to her creative processes.

The results of Kay’s endeavours are being exhibited at Higham Hall College in November. Kay's exhibition 'Connections' comprises textile pieces linking geology, art and craft. The pieces range from a quilted hanging which is over 6 feet long based on the Geologic Timescale, to a small 3D piece based upon a crystal geode and incorporating freeform crochet buttons.

The free exhibition runs from Sunday 11th to Friday 30th November and launches with a talk by Kay about her work at 2.00pm on the opening day. Please telephone to book a free place for this on 01768 776276.

With the approach of Bonfire Night, it seems a good time to mention the involvement of Percy House in this famous event.

Although the building dates from 1390, it was acquired by the Percy family in 1598.

Henry Percy (9th Earl of Northumberland - pictured) was related to Thomas Percy, one of the famous plotters. Although his involvement was never proven, Henry Percy spent the next 16 years locked in the Tower of London, eventually having to pay £30,000 for his release.

Come along and see this

We welcomed visitors for their 93rd birthday party. A tasty supper of ham, quiche, salmon mousse and many different salads, followed by delicious sweets started the evening. Stuart Bowie then had the ladies spellbound

with his talk on the history of magic, interspersed with magic tricks. How did he do that? We never found out, but it was fascinating to watch and enjoyed by all!

The November meeting is the A.G.M and a demonstration of festive flowers by Joan Moore.

Visitors welcome. Maggie Bell
