Do you have 6 to 7 hours to spare per week and are interested in gaining new skills in a friendly environment?

Citizens Advice Allerdale are looking for volunteers to help us deliver our telephone and face to face advice services.

You don’t need specific qualifications or experience, advisers receive full training and always have a supervisor available. As an Adviser, you could be exploring and identifying the clients’ problems, researching information using Citizens Advice resources and explaining options to clients and helping them make informed decisions about how to deal with their problems. You could also be acting on behalf of the client, negotiating, drafting or writing letters, making telephone calls or appropriate referrals.

You’ll gain new skills and experiences that could enhance your CV, the opportunity to meet new people and you’ll be helping our clients overcome

the problems they face and making a real difference to their lives.

We’re a registered charity, providing people with free information and advice to help them solve their benefits, debt, employment, housing and other problems.

Citizens Advice Allerdale actively welcomes disabled volunteers and volunteers with health conditions, including mental health conditions and this should not be a barrier to volunteering with us.

If you are interested in finding out more about our volunteering roles, please call us on 01900 604735, email training@cabnet.org.uk or visit our website, www.citizensadviceallerdale.org.uk

BASSENTHWAITE OSPREYS ~ COCKERMOUTH PROBUS CLUB ~

Margaret Ratcliffe presented an interesting talk on ospreys, with particular reference to the Bassenthwaite ospreys. She explained how the resident pair of birds usually arrive within a few days of each other in the spring. However, this year the female bird of the breeding pair did not arrive in time for breeding.

Margaret went on to describe the life cycle of these fascinating birds, which following mating, may produce 2 or 3 eggs. The male bird becomes the sole provider of fish at this time offering a selection from perch, chub and even pike to the incubating female. When the chicks hatch he will bring food every 2- 3 hours. Using photographs, she described how the adults catch the fish just below the surface of the lake using specialised talons. When presenting the prey to the young hatchlings the male eats the head of the fish to prevent larger live fish eating the smaller chicks!

Margaret continued her talk, describing how each year they migrate flying north from Senegal or Gambia. This is monitored using unobtrusive tracking devices attached to each bird. She reported how some of the birds fly a direct path across the Sahara with many birds perishing in the heat. Others do not fly directly to the Lake District but have been tracked in Europe before returning to their usual nesting sites. The talk continued with further references to the life cycle of these most welcome visitors to Bassenthwaite.

Stuart McIlhenny gave a hearty vote of thanks for a very interesting and informative talk about these captivating birds.
