After Months of Unrest, Nicaragua Is On The Brink of Chaos

“…The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; The God of my rock; in Him will I trust: He is my shield, and the horn of my salvation, my high tower, and my refuge, my saviour; Thou savest me from violence. I will call on the LORD, who is worthy to be praised: so shall I be saved from mine enemies.”

– II Samuel WME Partner & Supporters:

Decades ago, because of the devastation left behind after a massive earthquake, WME began its work in Nicaragua. Just as we were establishing programs to care for orphans, a Civil War exploded, and our facilities were caught in the middle of a battle zone. After years of violence and destruction, Nicaragua rose from the ashes. In the process, World Missionary Evangelism was there to help lift up children and families facing poverty and lack.

We believed those days marked by violence and upheaval were behind us, but in the summer of 2018, the unthinkable happened. AS WE WRITE THESE WORDS, THE COUNTRY OF NICARAGUA IS AGAIN TEETERING ON THE BRINK OF SELF-DESTRUCTION. AND ONCE MORE OUR MISSION AND WORKERS FIND THEMSELVES RIGHT IN THE MIDDLE OF A BATTLE ZONE.

In the area where we serve, frightened people have built barricades just as they did during the Civil War of 1979. If the opposing sides don’t soon find a way to negotiate peace, the conflict could spin out of control, bringing violence and insecurity to the entire region. IN JUST TWO MONTHS, THERE HAVE BEEN MORE THAN 200 DEATHS, THOUSANDS HAVE BEEN INJURED, AND NUMEROUS PUBLIC BUILDINGS HAVE BEEN BURNED TO THE GROUND. In the midst of all this conflict, WME native missionaries are holding firm to their faith and are continuing their work in the community to help feed the hungry, aid the displaced, witness to the lost and provide safety to those caught in the crossfire.

THE SITUATION IN NICARAGUA IS VERY GRAVE. GRANADA, A PLACE WHERE I STAY WHEN TRAVELLING TO NICARAGUA, HAS BEEN ATTACKED. NOT FAR FROM OUR MISSION CENTER PEOPLE ARE DYING, THERE IS WIDESPREAD BURNING AND LOOTING, AND THERE ARE SHORTAGES OF FOOD, FUEL AND MEDICAL CARE. TRAVEL IN THIS REGION IS DANGEROUS AND POTENTIALLY DEADLY.

With violence closing stores, disrupting shipments and making streets unsafe, we will help feed those who literally have nothing.

WE’RE WORKING THROUGH OUR MISSION CENTER TO COORDINATE RELIEF AND MEET PEOPLE’S NEEDS. THOSE HELPING US ARE SHOWING INCREDIBLE COURAGE AS THEY MARCH INTO DANGEROUS AREAS TO REACH MEN, WOMEN AND CHILDREN IN HARM’S WAY. AS WE WITNESS NEEDS, WE ARE ADAPTING TO MEET THEM. ALTHOUGH WE WOULD ALL LIKE TO SEE A QUICK RESOLUTION FOR THIS
